Dust Polarization From Starlight Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a statistical analysis of the interstellar medium (ISM) polarization from the largest compilation available of starlight data, which comprises ∼ 5500 stars. The measured correlation between the mean polarization degree and extinction indicates that ISM dust grains are not fully aligned with the uniform component of the large-scale Galactic magnetic field. Moreover, we estimate the ratio of the uniform to the random plane-of-thesky components of the magnetic field to be Bu/Br ≈ 0.8. From the analysis of starlight polarization degree and position angle we find that the magnetic field broadly follows Galactic structures on large-scales. On the other hand, the angular power spectrum Cl of the polarization degree for Galactic plane data is found to be consistent with a power-law, Cl ∝ l−1.5 (where l≈ 180◦/θ is the multipole order), for angular scales θ > 10′. We argue that this data set can be used to estimate diffuse polarized emission at microwave frequencies.

Polarized Far-infrared and Submillimeter Emission from Interstellar Dust
Polarized far-infrared and submillimeter emission is calculated for models of nonspherical dust grains that are constrained to reproduce the observed wavelength-dependent extinction and polarization of starlight. For emission from regions where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the line-of-sight, the far-infrared emission is expected to have substantial linear polarization at wavelengths λ...
متن کاملInterstellar Dust Grains
This review surveys the observed properties of interstellar dust grains: the wavelength-dependent extinction of starlight, including absorption features, from UV to infrared; optical luminescence; infrared emission; microwave emission; optical, UV, and X-ray scattering by dust; and polarization of starlight and of infrared emission. The relationship between presolar grains in meteorites and the...
متن کاملGrain Alignment, Polarization and Magnetic Fields
Aligned non-spherical dust particles polarize starlight passing through the dust cloud. They also emit polarized far infrared and sub-mm radiation. Substantial progress in understanding of grain alignment theory makes the interpretation of the polarized radiation in terms of underlying magnetic fields much more reliable. I discuss a number of fundamental processes that affect grain alignment. I...

We present a statistical analysis of Galactic interstellar polarization from the largest compilation available of starlight data. The data comprises ∼ 9300 stars of which we have selected ∼ 5500 for our analysis. We find a nearly linear growth of mean polarization degree with extinction. The amplitude of this correlation shows that interstellar grains are not fully aligned with the Galactic mag...
متن کاملGrain Alignment in Molecular Clouds
One of the most informative techniques of studying magnetic fields in molecular clouds is based on the use of starlight polarization and polarized emission arising from aligned dust. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. I briefly review basic physical processes involved in grain alignment.
